The first annual Greenies!
Connecticut is getting better when it comes to recycling, reusing and repurposing, though we have a long way to go. The Yale campus boasts numerous recycling receptacles, but walk just a couple blocks off campus and folks are throwing their plastic Evian bottles in the gutter.
To encourage greenness in the State, I am establishing the first annual Greenies:
1. Best Citizen:
Milford resident and former teacher Tony Sam for walking along Edgewood regularly just to pick up litter. "People talk about global warming, but they aren't talking about all this litter." He agreed that litter is part of global warming/climate change. He does not expect accolades, just hopes folks will quit throwing cans out their car windows.
2. Best University Practices:
Yale University for clearly labeling recycling matter from throwaway items, a practice ubiquitous across campus including in all libraries and other buildings.
3. Best Statewide Government Change: As of January 1, all those plastic bottles, cans and glass containers you got a Jefferson for will be worth a Roosevelt. WFSB reports that the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection confirms even if one bought a five-cent deposit drink, she will get the ten cents as of tomorrow. 4.Best Green Ride: The cheap (1.75 or .85 for seniors and the disabled) Connecticut Transit bus trip along the water, skirting past glorious Gulf Beach in Milford then meandering along Edgewood out to the West Haven Shore. Take the bus. You can look out the window and you will save the planet. 5. Best Coffee Roastery: Ashlawn Farms, Old Saybrook. Coffee is credited with saving the family farm, a Connecticut dairy farm that provided milk to hundreds of state households. Now, not only are they roasting coffee right there on the premises next to the charming train station, but they source only the best beans - from Brazil to Java. If you don't become addicted to what I consider "real" coffee (buh bye, Dunkin) I will put your first born through college. (Side note, do not take me up on this).
Happy Green New Year!
