Earth Day 2025: indulge yourself while protecting the planet

I loved the recent Blue Origin all-female trip to space and even consider Katy Perry an astronaut now. But then, I was that kid who raced to watch Man land on the moon in July 1969, nerdily pushing my way from the confines of friend Stephanie's house up the street.
Today on Earth Day, no doubt the Blue Origin ladies are thinking of Earth much differently than you and I are. I can only imagine the thrill of seeing our planet even from 62 miles above sea level (still well above the Kármán line). I ask that you close your eyes and imagine Earth in a similarly special vein.
Buying green products won't necessarily change the world but if you only buy sustainably, your carbon footprint at the time of your death will be a source of pride. Not to you, who is dead, but to your family. Imagine knowing your mom or grandmother had composted their entire adult lives? So here is a smattering of products I have enjoyed and do enjoy:
#1: Oceanfoam rollers. These eco-conscious foam rollers use recycled materials to create a healthier lifestyle and are designed to massage any part of your body. A wavy texture stimulates muscles, releases tightness and improves mobility.
Each roller boasts 15% Bloom Algae Foam, which cleans water and helps to restore aquatic ecosystems, and captures CO2 emissions. I'm not a yogi, but I have been told it's a yoga-friendly product and gets to the deep tissue the way TV detective Monk gets to the murderer.
Available on the company's site and on Amazon (I love the 11"x3.5" travel size.)
#2 Calm app. No one sent me this. I found it on my phone's store and tried it. A skeptic of most apps, I soon fell in love with the cricket, ocean, bamboo forest and jet airliner sounds. The bamboo forest in particular is a delicate surprise. You can also listen to stars like Matthew McConaughey tell you a story or a best-selling author read their book. I can't say enough good things about this. I have turned it on at a loud 7-11 while eating my hot dog (ear buds in, of course).
#3 The Sud Scrub replaces your loofah or wash cloth for a more sustainable face cleaning or body scrubbing. It is made of non-toxic, food-grade materials infused with silver and zinc. It is one of the most antimicrobial beauty products on the market and with every purchase, you remove five pounds of plastic waste from the environment. Buy on Amazon.
4. Sproutworld Pencils (top) offer an alternative to the 135 million plastic pens produced each day. Imagine how thankful the planet would be if we could turn this enormous amount of plastic into plants? With 12 seed pencils - one for each month - per pack, you can enjoy a different customizable instrument each month. Kids in particular will love these. Plant the stubby part of the pencil when it's almost worn. The seeds are in the little cap on the end of the pencil.
"SproutWorld was founded in 2013 by Danish entrepreneur Michael Stausholm," says its publicist. "The company holds the global patent for 'plantable writing instruments' and has sold over 80 million plantable pencils in more than 80 countries." Sprout plantable pencils' seed capsules sprout into basil, sunflower, cherry tomato, or melon. Follow them on Instagram: @sproutworldofficial and buy your pencil at Sproutworld.
5. With Love, Meghan" (Netflix) may seem an unusual inclusion, but the naysayers can kiss my spun honey and blueberry-preserve-cum-yoghurt-topped frittata. "I've always loved taking something pretty ordinary and elevating it," she understates in the show's trailer. Well, I feel elevated: I loved every episode, amazed that the "Suits" star and wife of our favorite prince is quite so knowledgeable about everything from gardening to baking. My only quibble? - a show about authentic and healthful living should be filmed in one's actual home. But I digress...
You may learn a thing or two in episodes featuring friends from her show, her makeup artist and even Chez Panisse founder Alice Waters. As a native Californian, I will admit to a bias. I was born in LA, lived in Ventura for a year and am from the Bay Area.
Sussex (she makes a point to friend Mindy Kaling that she hasn't been "Markle" in a long time) has a gift for both presentation and substance. She does have a degree from Northwestern, worked in Buenos Aires as an intern press officer in 2001, has long been an advocate for racial equality and is a strong advocate for women's issues (as a pre-teen she challenged a sexist commercialand the advertiser removed the misogynist content). She also was a successful lifestyle blogger, curating and posting content on The Tig (2014–2017). Follow her lifestyle brand @aseverofficial.
As we mourn the death of Pope Francis -- an environmentalist who lived a simple, sustainable life even with his position -- it is even more important to incorporate green practices. Whether it's the way you bathe (limiting showers, adjusting shower heads), eat (forgoing meat, at least on Mondays) or repurposing your clothes, we all can make a difference.
